Studio 44 conundrum - solved

UPDATE
Thanks Ted for this advice.
As you can see, as far as cover removal goes at least, the 21 and the 44 are similar enough. Set those tabs wide and bring the carriage hard to port. Another great carriage removal avoidance ploy.

  1. Hmmn, if it's like the Studio 21 I had, the removal of the cover is just a matter of having the margins set all the way to the edges. Only then will there be the magical clearance needed to contort the shell off.

    1. Thank you Ted, I don't know how similar they are under the skin but I'll give it a try.

    2. Done in under 60 seconds. So easy when you know how.

  3. Great to hear you got it to work with Ted's help!
As usual, I could not offer suggestions because my Studio 44's work fine.

  4. Good to see that you are advancing with your Studio 44 and got it working. I wish I could say the same with mine. I got the cover off quite easily, but getting to the escapement to repair the skips is a very long story -- if I decide to repair it rather than use it for parts.

  5. Thanks to you and Ted for sharing the cover removal trick. I have a seriously banged up Olivetti that needs major surgery and this might help.

  6. I'm still too much of a newbie to even consider taking a machine apart to that extent. The thought of it makes my palms a little sweaty, as a matter of fact. I'll get there though.

  7. Did you ever solve the key resistance problem that originally prompted you to take the machine apart? My 44 has the same issue.

    1. Hi Eric, yes. The resistance was coming from a slider mechanism which forms part of the escapement/spacing action - best way I can describe it, sorry. I have tried to explain the issue along with the fix in this post here.

    2. Oh this is great! the A and Q are my problem keys, too. I'm betting I'll find the same issue. Great, great posts! Thank you.
